STM32 is the world's most popular 32-bit microcontroller family, used in everything from smart home devices to industrial automation. With hundreds of parts across multiple series, choosing the right one can be overwhelming.
This quick guide breaks down the main STM32 series and helps you pick the right chip for your project.
STM32 Family Overview
STMicroelectronics organizes STM32 into several families based on performance:
STM32F0 — Entry Level
- Core: ARM Cortex-M0
- Speed: Up to 48 MHz
- Best for: Simple control, sensor reading, low-cost products
- Examples: STM32F030, STM32F051
- Price range: ~$0.50-$2
If you're replacing 8-bit AVR or PIC chips, start here. Low cost, simple to use, plenty of peripherals for most basic applications.
STM32F1 — The Classic
- Core: ARM Cortex-M3
- Speed: Up to 72 MHz
- Best for: General-purpose, motor control, USB devices
- Examples: STM32F103C8T6 (the famous "Blue Pill"), STM32F103RCT6
- Price range: ~$1-$5
The STM32F1 series is the workhorse of the STM32 world. The STM32F103C8T6 is probably the most popular microcontroller ever made — cheap, plentiful, and well-supported by the community.
STM32F4 — High Performance
- Core: ARM Cortex-M4F (with FPU)
- Speed: Up to 180 MHz
- Best for: Digital signal processing, graphics, complex algorithms
- Examples: STM32F407, STM32F411
- Price range: ~$3-$10
If you need floating-point math, DSP instructions, or more processing power, the F4 series is a sweet spot. Great for audio processing, machine learning at the edge, and complex user interfaces.
STM32H7 — The Beast
- Core: ARM Cortex-M7
- Speed: Up to 480 MHz
- Best for: High-end applications, machine vision, advanced motor control
- Examples: STM32H743, STM32H750
- Price range: ~$5-$20
When you need maximum performance, the H7 series delivers. It's overkill for most projects, but essential for demanding applications like industrial cameras, edge AI, and high-speed data acquisition.
How to Choose the Right STM32
Ask yourself these questions:
1. How much processing power do you need?
If you're just reading sensors and turning LEDs on/off — F0 or F1 is plenty. If you're running machine learning algorithms or processing high-resolution images — go with F4 or H7.
2. What peripherals do you need?
Make sure the chip has the interfaces you need: UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, ADC channels. Check the datasheet carefully — the number of pins matters!
3. How much memory do you need?
Flash memory stores your program, RAM stores variables. Simple projects work with 32KB Flash / 4KB RAM. Complex applications may need 512KB+ Flash and 128KB+ RAM.
4. What's your budget?
STM32 prices range from under $1 to over $20. Don't overspend on features you'll never use — but don't cheap out and end up needing to redesign later.
5. Is it available?
This is the most important question! Even the perfect chip is useless if you can't get it. Some STM32 parts have long lead times or are allocation-constrained.
